Bike Rack That Allows Rear Door Opening on 2023 Sprinter

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 05/07/2025

Question:

Hello! i have a 2023 sprinter and i am looking for a hitch mount bike rack for 2 bikes. Is there one that is streamline enough when the bikes are off, that I can open the back van doors? My clearance measurement from the middle of the 2 hitch pin hole to the bottom of the door is 8. I looked at the Kuat sherpa and this measurement was 9 on the Kuat webpage, so too tall. Thank you for your time. Roxanne

Hey Roxanne! The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 # SH22G is about as sleek as it gets, especially since it doesn't have wheel cradles sticking way up. I don't have this measurement available on every single bike rack but if the Kuat won't clear I'm pretty positive nothing will.

What most people do to keep rear door access on their Sprinter with the bike rack installed is add the Kuat Pivot 2 Swing Away Hitch Extender # PVD20B or # PVP20B. This lets you swing it out to the side so it is completely out of the way. The only downside to an adapter like this is it reduces the capacity of the hitch by 50%.

If you have the clearance for it, you could also use the # 325-GH-303. The stacked receivers will not reduce your hitch capacity and will allow you to mount the bike rack lower so the doors could clear without the swing away adapter. The only issue you might run into is ground clearance. I attached the measurements below for your reference.

Hey Roxanne, did you have a chance to try the Kuat Pivot 2 Swing Away Hitch Extender or the stacked receivers to see if they worked with your Sprinter? I'm asking because your experience could really help others with similar setups.
