Why do the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs Cause a Stiff Ride When Unloaded?

Updated 09/26/2025 | Published 04/26/2025

Question:

Hi. I installed the load lifter 5000 to my 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro because the truck sagged after putting on a cap and gear that weigh around 600lb. I wanted to get level again and be able to stay level when towing. When not towing and when driving normally at 5 psi with the 600lb on the back of the truck, it’s so rough a ride that the back jolts on bumps and bounces. The install is correct and it was quite easy. Why is this such a stiff ride?

Hello Brad,

The reason your Tacoma rides rough after installing the LoadLifter 5000 airbags # AL49DQ is because the airbags add a lot of stiffness to your rear suspension, even at the minimum recommended 5 psi. Airbags are designed to support extra weight, but they also resist compression more than your original leaf springs. This means that even when you aren’t towing, the airbags are still making the suspension much stiffer than it was from the factory.

At 5 psi, the airbags are firm enough to keep your truck level with the 600 pounds of gear, but they also reduce the natural flex and smoothness that your truck’s suspension had before. The result is that the rear end feels harsher, and you feel more jolts and bumps while driving.

Overall, the rough ride you’re feeling is simply because airbags are naturally stiffer than regular suspension, even when lightly inflated. They are great for carrying heavy loads and towing, but they do make everyday driving feel firmer.

Hey Brad, How has the ride been since you installed the LoadLifter 5000? I'm curious to know if you've found a way to make it more comfortable for everyday driving. Your experience could help others dealing with similar issues.
