What Is Needed to Convert 5,200 lb Trailer Axle to 8 Lug

Updated 09/26/2025 | Published 04/20/2025

Question:

I’m looking to convert the hubs on my 1994 Featherlite 3 horse gooseneck trailer to accommodate a 16” wheel. I believe the factory axles are a 5200 and have 5x4.5 hubs. I would like to convert to a 8x6.5 hub and I’ve found Dexter 8-219-4UC3. Would this hub work for my axles and would the current brakes work or do I need to also convert the brakes to a different size to accommodate the new hub and drum?

Hey Josh, since we know you have a 5,200 lb trailer axle the correct hub you'd need to convert to a 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern would be the Dexter part # 8-219-4UC3 that you referenced. You wouldn't need anything else to make this conversion either.

Hey Josh, did the Dexter hub work out for your trailer conversion? I'm curious to know if everything fit smoothly, as it could help others looking to make similar upgrades.
