How to Protect Wires From Squirrels

Updated 04/23/2025 | Published 04/17/2025

Question:

My second Curt trailer light module just failed due, I suspect, to a squirrel chewing on the wires under the trailer and causing a short. Is there a way to fuse the module so I dont have to replace it if the squirrels wont leave the trailer alone?

Hey George! You can install the Replacement In-Line Fuse Holder for Curt Wiring Harness item # C58470-1on the 4-way wires of the Curt 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector with Circuit Protected Powered Tail Light Converter item # C85FV. This would be the only way we have to run fuses to that harness.

To protect your trailer wiring, I recommend wrapping it with the Wire Loom 1/4" Diameter, 10' Long item # 7509-10. Other than running conduit I don't have another option to keep squirrels out of your trailer's wiring.

Thanks, Jerred. I still haven't discovered the fault in the wiring, but will install a fused link in the power circuit. Your solution is by far the most practical yet; others include traps, owls, and boa constrictors. I have coyotes, but they don't like to crawl under the trailer. G.

@GeorgeF You're welcome! Happy to provide a practical solution. Not sure how throwing a snake into your situation is going to do anything but cause more problems lol. If it was my trailer, I would go to a local hardware store and pick up some conduit and rewire the trailer using the item # A25W42B kit. You won't have to chase the fault in your wiring or worry as much about your rodent problem. It would be a little bit more work but you'd get a long term solution out of doing it.
