Should There Be Any Play In Trailer Leaf Springs
Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 03/11/2025 >
Question:
Hello, I have a somewhat quick question about trailer suspension. I just bought a trailer and pulled it apart to give it a good look over and noticed that when the trailer is off the ground, there is some play in the leaf springs, but only where the leafs bolt to the equalizer and where the equalizer mounts to the frame. After looking at it for a little, it appears that the bolts may have come loose, because the shackle straps are somewhat loose. My question is, will I be okay to just tighten the bolts so there shouldnt be anymore play in them or will I need to replace the equalizers, bushings in the leafs, and the hardware? The leafs themselves shouldnt need replaced as they arent cracked or bent and the outer eyelets where the spring mounts to the frame are still tight with no movement. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Hey Aidan, a small amount of play is fine in your leaf springs. If the springs are sagging significantly then that could indicate that your springs are worn or there may be other suspension problems.
If you notice any of that, then you are going to need to replace your springs and the hardware. If this is the case for you after further investigating, then let me know what kind of springs and hardware you need with measurements, and I'd be happy to get you back on the road!
In the meantime, if you have any other questions, please feel free to let me know!

Hey Aidan, what did you find after checking the play in your trailer’s leaf springs and equalizer? Were the bolts just loose, or did you end up needing to replace any of the springs or hardware? Your update could make it easier for others troubleshooting similar suspension issues.
