Can A 12v Redarc Brake Controller Be Installed On A 24v Vehicle?

Updated 03/16/2025 | Published 03/09/2025

Question:

Hello, Looking for a 24 volt compatible brake controller to use on Japanese domestic commercial vehicles to tow U.S. model trailers equipped with 12 volt electric brakes. Will this Redarc controller output the required 12 volts although the tow vehicle is 24 volt? Thanks

Hello Patrick, thanks for reaching out. It is possible to install a brake controller on a vehicle with a 24 volt system. You will need to install a 24v relay to do so. I have included a diagram for you below that shows how the relay would wire to the vehicle and to the brake controller.

As long as you follow the diagram, you could install any 12v brake controller, such as the Redarc # RED52VR, which comes with a universal harness.

Thank you for the explanation. Although this is the way we are currently wiring up our fleet vehicles, I should have been more specific. The Redarc RED63RR is actually 24v compatible without the relay and based on the literature for this model, it does not specify the output voltage to the 12v electric brakes. There is an illustration showing a 24v in from stop lights with a 12v output wire to the electric brakes therefore one would assume the controller has the ability to reduce 24v power input, down to the required 12v output. Just wanted to verify this before pulling the trigger. Thanks
