Can The AKIHUB-865-7-2-EZ-K Hubs Be Converted From Grease To Oil Bath?

Updated 10/31/2025 | Published 02/24/2025

Question:

I am looking at converting my 2016 Momentum 376TH to disc brakes. I prefer the separate hubs and slip-on rotors. Can these idler hubs be converted to oil bath versus grease?

Hello Terry, thanks for reaching out. Technically, yes, the # AKIHUB-865-7-2-EZ-K hub could be converted over to an oil bath hub. The thing is, this hub comes pre-greased. So you would have to remove the bearings and clean every speck of grease off of everything in order to change over to oil. This would be super messy and time consuming. De-greasing a bearing is not fun.

A better option will be to go with the # AKIHUB-865-7-1-EZ-K hub assembly instead, since it does not come pre-greased. You will just need to swap out the included grease seals, for oil seals. The correct oil seal for this hub is part # 9103309.

I hope this helps. Reply below and let me know if you need anything else.

Hey Terry, how did things go with converting your Momentum 376TH to disc brakes using the hub setup we talked about? Did the ungreased hub and oil seals make the process smoother? Your update could make it easier for others planning the same upgrade.

@JesseM after much thought I did not go with oil bath bearings. Thinking it over risk vs. reward the risks outweighed the reward. Mainly that if a seal fails on the road ALL of the lubricant could be lost before I would even have a hint of trouble leading to catastrophic failure. I blown seal on a greased hub will fare much better under the same circumstances.

@Terry Makes perfect sense, Terry. You bring up a great point about the potential risk if a seal fails — sticking with greased hubs is definitely the safer option in that case. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience; it’ll be valuable for others planning similar upgrades. You know where to find me if you ever need anything else — and I’m always up for helping out!
