How to Install 5-Way on 2017 Nissan Rogue for Surge Trailer Brakes

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/23/2025

Question:

It seems there are no 5-pin wiring harnesses for a 2017 Nissan Rogue not the sport to disengage jet surge brakes. I see some folks wire a 4 to 5 pin connector but was cautioned against it. What options are there? If its going to draw too much voltage from the reverse lights, is it possible to run a dedicated wire perhaps with a fuse to the cabin with push button to disengage surge brakes?

Hey Joseph, so the 5-way trailer connector is just not super common on vehicles like your 2017 Nissan Rogue as surge brake trailers aren't commonly towed with lighter duty vehicles. So best option is a 4-way like the part # 118480 and then convert it to a 5-way with an adapter like the part # C57187 and run the fifth pin to the reverse light circuit. The reverse lockout solenoids do not draw enough to hurt the reverse lights. A switch is feasible too but that's going to be a lot more involved than just running to the reverse lights.

Hey Joseph, how did things go with the 4-way harness and 5-way adapter setup on your Rogue? Did running the fifth pin to the reverse light circuit work out as expected? Your update could make it easier for others towing with similar vehicles.
