Updated 11/04/2025 | Published 01/31/2025

Question:

hello, I have a 2018 Silverado 1500 with a hitch that states 600lbs. My travel trailer max weight is 6k, but the max I load it is 5500lbs. tongue weight is 680-700lbs. would my curt distribution system 1000lbs tw 10000 max trailer wt. change the hitch 600lb rating?

Hey Paul, thanks for reaching out!

The only way your Curt weight distribution system will increase the weight capacity for your truck is if the sticker on your truck hitch shows a higher rating for weight distribution on the sticker.

If your hitch doesn't have that higher rating, then I recommend replacing your etrailer hitch with the Class IV etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98860 which has that higher rating. Just make sure your truck can handle the higher rating and you'll be good to go!

What Curt system do you have?

Hey Paul, did you end up checking the sticker on your Silverado’s hitch to see if it lists a higher weight distribution rating? Knowing that would help confirm whether your Curt system gives you the extra capacity you need. Your update could make it easier for others towing similar trailers.

Use this one with corrections Paul 11/3/2025 @JonG thanks for asking, the stock receiver is only has a tounge weight for 500 with no change if weight distribution is used. So I bought curts 10k / 1k tounge receiver from etrailer. I do use a weight distribution, and my trailer tongue weight is 800 lbs +&- . One thing about the curt receiver i dont like is the old stock receiver had10 bolts mounted to frame and the new curt receiver only had 8 bolts mounting points. The new curt receiver did not have the two vertical mount bolt holes like the stock receiver, but is rated more. Very odd Thank you for your support Paul

@Paul Glad to hear you upgraded to the Curt # C14006 for the higher rating! I definitely see what you mean about using less hardware, but I would like to offer a word of encouragement and say that Curt has done extensive testing with this setup so you can be confident in the weight rating they have listed out for it.
