Hey Chris, thanks for reaching out!

What you're looking for is the Thule WingBar Evo Roof Rack for Flush Rails # TH22SG. This system has the lowest profile while still offering the overhanging crossbars, which is an excellent choice in my opinion.

We haven't had a chance to install this exact system on a 2018 Ford Explorer as of yet, but we've had the opportunity to install it as a similar setup on a 2023 Hyundai Tucson so I'm attaching a photo of that so you can get a good idea of what the end result will be.

If you let me know what you're planning on using the roof rack for, I'd be happy to make an additional recommendation for you!

Hi Jon. Thanks for you quick reply! Is the Thule a lower profile than the Rhino Rack Vortex? Also, is there anything lower without an overhang? I really appreciate you taking time to answer my questions. I decided not to get the cheap Amazon bars and want to make sure I get it right the 1st time. FYI I’m using the racks for a coupe of Kayaks using Malone Downloader carriers. My previous vehicle had factory crossbars that were pretty low off roof. Every inch counts when lifting the kayaks after a long day.

@Chris The WingBar is shorter than the Vortex, but it won't be by much - most roof racks all sit at about the same height. The Thule also has another advantage with the DownLoader because the Thule legs aren't as long so you'll be able to scoot the DownLoader cradles closer to the edge of the vehicle for easier loading. When it comes to the crossbars that end in the legs (as opposed to overhanging), they usually do sit lower, but it's typically only within 1" and the trade-off in height isn't worth losing the extension past the legs, in my opinion.
