Vertical Spacing Between The Bottom Of The etrailer Trailer Tool Box And Gas Strut Mounting Bracket

Updated 01/05/2025 | Published 12/19/2024

Question:

Hi, what is the internal height dimension, between the bottom of the box and the bottom of the gas cylinder bracket? Im looking to put a large box-shaped object inside this thats 20.5 inches tall and looking to make sure it will fit with the lid closed. Thanks!

Hey Sean,

From the bottom of the etrailer Trailer Tool Box # e44VV to the bottom of the gas strut bracket is right at 19". There's also the latching mechanism on the front of the box that sticks out inside the box that that's about 17.5" up from the bottom. What are the full dimensions of the object? There's about 13.5" of space between the gas strut and the latch mechanism so there might be a way to angle it inside the toolbox and still get it to fit.

Thanks so much Kevin! The full dimensions are 8.7x10.6x20.5" - and I'll be putting two of them in the box, hopefully. (12V LiFePO4 batteries, resting on their short side). I was most worried about the gas cylinder as it will extend across the full width of the box when the lid is closed at about that height. But, I think it may be possible to put one on either side of the cylinder mount. You don't happen to know of any similar boxes that are a bit taller, do you? Ideally I'd have a little more space to put a damping pad to help reduce road vibrations getting to the batteries, but I may be able to make this work. (Trying to go taller instead of wider as the trailer is narrow and has a pretty short tongue; going with a 45" wide box would start to reduce maneuverability, and if I or a friend jackknifed it in a campground, the box/battery would be the first thing hit). Thanks, -Sean

@SeanT I'm going to request to get this pulled and I'll put together some cardboard boxes to match your batteries and see how they fit and send you some pictures. Is 8.7 the width or the height?

@SeanT That's what I was assuming. I'm not the best box maker in the world so my "battery" ended up being 11" wide x 9" tall x 21" long and I was able to make it fit sitting on its side with plenty of room for the second battery and your wiring. Even with it being 21" tall the box sat just under the inner lip going around the box and was thin enough to fit on just one side so that it won't interfere with the gas strut when you close the lid. I've attached some pictures above showing this. To help hold the batteries in place you'll need to be a bit creative since typical battery mounts would require you to lay the batteries upright instead of on their side. If it were me I'd just pick up some 1x2's from your local hardware store and cut them down to form a square base around the battery. You can screw the pieces all together and then mount it to the toolbox for the battery to sit in. Next I'd mount a strap like # 37217544 and run the strap over the top of the battery to hold it in place. If you have any other questions or still need some help with this install just let me know and I'd be happy to help.
