Troubleshooting a Curt Echo That Has a Delay Followed by a Surge When Braking

Updated 12/05/2024 | Published 12/04/2024

Question:

I just used my trailer brake controller for the first time. It is a C75YV. There is a delay in the braking followed by a surge causing the vehicle to jerk. If I turn down the level below the point where the surge occurs then the brakes are set too light and dont really stop the trailer.

Hey Scott, the only thing I can think of off the top is that maybe the controller is not pointed in the right direction. You'll want to make sure that the controller is completely parallel and is pointed in the direction of travel. I'd also suggest checking the wiring and making sure that there is no damaged wires and that nothing is connected to corroded metal.

I know you've already tried adjusting the gain, but I'd also suggest adjusting that again as well. I've attached a troubleshooting article that you can take a look at as well.

Hi Bryce, Thanks for the timely response. One of the reasons for purchasing this unit was because the site claims it can be installed at any angle so hiding it under the dash should be easy. This description is copied directly from this website... "Thanks to the 3-axis accelerometer, the main unit can be positioned at any angle. No matter how you install it, the unit will sense the direction of travel and deliver smooth, even braking." So while I am willing to change the angle of the controller it should be working properly as installed. The other issue is there is no clear forward portion of the unit so can you let me know which side should be pointed in the direction of travel? Thanks

@Scott Scott, there is no direction the Curt Echo needs to be, either side of the Echo can face the direction of travel.
