Parts Needed To Convert A 2004 Ranger Trail Boat Trailer To Oil Bath Hubs

Updated 12/02/2024 | Published 11/30/2024

Question:

I have a 2004 Rangertrail single axle boat trailer that was factory equipped with DB-42 Buddy brakes and oil-filled cool hubs. I continually find the retainer clips on my right side brakes broken and brake clips rubbing on inside of wheel. Any suggestions on cause of frequent failures. I am also considering changing the oil-filled hubs to grease filled hubs, can you recommend the correct parts to use?

Hey Daniel,

Without seeing the trailer in person it's a bit hard to diagnose why your brake clips are popping on just one side, but it leads me to believe that there's something wrong with that caliper. The spring clips sit outside so there is the possibility that something is hitting them while moving or that the caliper assembly is loose enough to wiggle around while moving and is letting the clips touch the inside of the wheel and breaking them. Like I said, it's going to be hard to diagnose but with it being isolated to one side we know there has to be something wrong.

To switch over to oil bath I'd need to know your bearing, grease seal, and hub cap part numbers or their dimensions in order to pick out the correct replacements. If you can't read the part numbers then you'll need a caliper # PTW80157 to measure the spindle at points B, C, and D from the diagram below to get the inner diameters. For the outer diameters you'll need to measure the bore hole of the hub.
