Do the Diodes in the Curt Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit Keep the Braking System from Activating?

Updated 12/02/2024 | Published 11/30/2024

Question:

Do the diodes on this harness protect the Demco Stay and Play from operating when the coach is not connected? Or do I have to still install the demco diodes? I was driving our toad today and the demco switch was on by accident. During an off ramp on the highway the brakes applied. I thought that would not happen if the coach was not connected? Thanks

No, they do not when you're not hooked up but that's not the issue. The Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo item # DM86VR needs the stop light signal from your motorhome in order to activate. If the system is activating when you're not connected then something likely is wired incorrectly. I would recheck your wiring to make sure everything is hooked up right.

I have attached a diagram below to help you out.

The diodes on the Curt Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles item # C96JR prevents exactly what you're describing from happening when you're flat towing your Jeep. There wouldn't be any signal to activate your brakes if this harness isn't connected.

I was thinking since I do not have the diodes installed, when the jeep brake lights are applied the signal is backfeeding up the wire. The Demco would have no way of knowing if that signal is coming from the motorhome or the jeep brake lights. I have checked everything and it appears I have everything installed correctly except I did not install the demco diodes because I thought the curt diodes would do the same thing. The brakes work great when I am towing the jeep. However without the motor home connected, if the demco switch is on every time the jeep brake lights come on the demco operates the brakes. this is even true if you put the hazards on, the brakes operate with every flash of the lights.
