Will Flat Tow Parts from 2015 Chevy Equinox Fit Another Chevy Equinox With AWD

Updated 11/19/2025 | Published 11/30/2024

Question:

My 2015 Chevy Equinox was recently totalled. I had bought a towing system from you to tow behind my RV some years ago. Two Questions: 1 I assume I can take off all the components from the totalled car and use them on another 2015 car of the same make and model? 2 What about if it was an AWD model - would the same parts work - and can I even flat tow an AWD? The manual says I can but there seem to be differing opinions

Hi Beverley; as long as there is no damage to the base plate kit or anything else you can carry it and the other components over to your new 2015 Equinox. If you aren't sure, I would go ahead and replace it with the # RM-523160-5. The only exception is if you have the brush guard on the new one. The base plate kits won't fit if you have the brush guard. Since your owner's manual says you can flat tow the AWD model you're good to go.

One other thing worth mentioning is there may be a difference with the Fusemaster. The V6 uses # RM76511. The 4-cylinder uses # RM-76517 and also requires a charge line kit # RM-156-25. If there is a difference in the engines between the two models you will need to swap out these parts accordingly. Here is the full note from Roadmaster:

"As per GM Technical Service Bulletin 17-NA-348, GM has identified 4-cylinder models of this vehicle as having steering instability issues while towing. If you have a 4-cylinder model of this vehicle, you will need a 76517 instead of a 76511, and will need to leave fuse DLIS #32 intact and pull the ABS module fuse located under the hood. Note: due to manufacturing variances, some 4-cylinder models may label the ABS module fuse as #15 or #16. You will also need to install a charge wire kit, pn 156-25. This information is current as of November 20, 2017. Contact the vehicle manufacturer for further updates."

If you're reusing your old 3160-1B tow bar again you will probably want the instructions. It has been discontinued but you can still find them here:

Hi Beverley, how did things go transferring your towing setup to the new Equinox? I'm curious if the base plate and Fusemaster parts matched up the way you expected. Your update could make it easier for others replacing a totalled vehicle with the same model.

@RobinH - thanks very much for following up. YES! it transferred over beautifully - I was away all summer and had absolutely no issues - it was just like towing my old car. Your advice was much appreciated in my decision making.
