Adding Light Kit For Bike Rack To A Towed Vehicle

Updated 12/04/2024 | Published 11/27/2024

Question:

I want to add a bike rack with a cover on my Toad, which will block the tail lights. Because of that, I want to add lights to the bike rack. Is it possible to just splice in to the wiring feeding the taillights? I assume I would splice before the diode?

Hello Paul, thanks for reaching out. Your towed vehicle is a 2022 Chevy Colorado, correct? If so, the best way to do this will be to just splice in an additional 4-flat connector on the back of your Toad. The Curt 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector # C58044 can be used for this. just as you said you will splice in before the diode so go between the diode and the tail light.

Yes, for the 2022 Colorado. Wouldn’t you splice before the diode, so between the wiring harness connect at the front and the diode? This would essentially run the additional brake lights directly from the Coach?

@Paul Ok so that is a great question and I just talked this over with the other techs in my department and the conclusion was that it really does not matter which side of the diode you splice in on. Either way you are tapping into the same signal. If you go "behind" the diode like between the tail light and the diode the signal from the RV would still be passing thru the diode to where it will still serve its purpose. Ultimately I did agree with my associates that it really wouldn't matter.
