Recommended Coolant Heater for a 2010 Nissan Frontier w/ a 4.0L Engine

Updated 12/16/2025 | Published 11/27/2024

Question:

I have a 2010 nissan frontier 4.0l V6. I am looking to replace a non working Katsheater. It is a lower radiator hose heater. I live in Alaska and we have temps as low as -50f with a winter average on 0- -15. I have 2 qiestions. the current heater is placed between the lower radiator outlet and the thermostat. Is that the correct spot? Does the heat open the thermostst to circulate coolant through the engine? Secondly what heater would you advise for this vehicle?

Hey William! Not sure which heater you have but our Kat's Heaters Thermostatically Controlled Circulating Tank Heater item # KH13080 has the option to be installed on the lower radiator hose and then be connected to the heater core hose. It's supposed to be attached to the engine block drain to get your entire cooling system. This one would be my recommendation. it keeps your coolant heated over night at 175 degrees so you're ready to go in the morning. It works by siphoning the coolant into the tank so it will not open your thermostat.

Hey William, how did things turn out with the Kat’s circulating tank heater on your Frontier? Did it keep your coolant warm enough through those Alaska temps? Your update could make it easier for others dealing with extreme cold starts.

@JerredH Well not really. It heats up but does not circulate through the engine. I use an infrared thermometer to check.
