Can The Thule Hullavator Be Used With A Sculling Boat

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/24/2024

Question:

Will the Thule Thule Hullavator work for transporting a 17-18 single sculling boat on a F150 supercab truck? Im a senior trying to figure out how to transport the boat. Had Yakima bed racks and carrier for the kayak but Im no longer able to lift it that high to load and changing over to single scull boat. Thanks.

Hi Elzi,

The Thule Hullavator Pro Kayak Roof Rack and Lift Assist w/ Tie-Downs # TH898 would work, but it does have some requirements. Your crossbars will need to overhang the feet by 4" - 8" to avoid hitting the doors when loading and unloading and you'll need to have a crossbar spread of at least 24" apart. The roof of your F-150 will also need to be rated for at least 130lbs. The mount for your oars/paddles could potentially need to be removed but that would require actually testing the fit to see what will work.

This carrier is designed to either clamp onto the crossbars or use the mounting channel built into them for a quick an easy installation/removal. Straps can be ran through the cradles of the carrier to secure the boat. I've attached a short video below where we'll show you this carrier in use.

Hi Elzi, how did things go with the Thule Hullavator on your F-150 for your single scull boat? Were the crossbar spacing and overhang requirements manageable for your setup? Your update could make it easier for others working on a similar transport solution.
