Looking For 2" Wide Leaf Spring For Tandem Axle Smoker

Published 11/15/2024

Question:

I’m replacing a busted leaf spring on a tandom axle smoker, it has 2” wide double eye leaf springs and all I see are 1 3/4” options everywhere, do we have 2” options? Thanks,

Hello Greg, thanks for reaching out. That smoker must be a beast to have two axles!

We do offer some 2" wide leaf springs. All of the 2" wide springs are slipper style springs such as the Dexter 4-Leaf Slipper Spring # DX93QR. This is 26-3/4" long from the center of the eye to the end of the spring. It is intended to be used with a 2,500 lb rated axle.

I suggest you measure the springs on your smoker to see what length you need. Jack up one side of the trailer so you can measure the springs when not under a load. Also confirm that they are the slipper style springs instead of double eye springs. You will also want to confirm the weight capacity of your axle. If you want to let me know your spring length and axle capacity I am happy to look into it and see if we have anything for you.

So if I went from the double eye to the slipper spring, I assume I’d have to change our some parts, correct? I’m not against that, just seeing what I’d need to do to change to slipper.

@Gregory That is correct. The double eye springs are mounted and use a different suspension setup than the slipper springs. Ideally we would get you a replacement spring that is identical to the current spring. It is possible to change over but you would basically be redoing the whole suspension which I am not going to recommend unless there are absolutely no other options.

@Jesseis is it an option to leave everything as is and go to 1 3/4 leaf springs? There would be some space in the hanger?

@Gregory I really can't recommend doing that. You might be able to get away with it but it would be risky since there would be gaps in the hangers. Trailers are built around a certain type of suspension and generally there is not much tolerance when replacing these parts. A direct replacement is best. What kind of springs do you have now? Are they slipper or double eye? Let me know the length and axle capacity and we can get into the next steps of finding the right stuff.
