Companion Hitch Slider that is Difficult

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/14/2024

Question:

I purchased the BandW Companion Hitch a few months ago and Im overall happy with it. However, it seems very hard to get the hitch to slide back when the camper is attached. Have to hold the trailer brake and give the truck a good amount of throttle to get it to slide, which causes it to slam in place. Ive also noticed some metal shavings after it slides. Is this normal or do I have a defective unit?

The slider tubes do not require lubing so that is a little concerning. I would recommend contacting them directly at 800-248-6564 and see what they recommend. I could see maybe once or twice it being difficult or stiff but after a few months it should be worn in enough to work smooth.

Hey, were you able to get any guidance from B&W about your Companion slider sticking? Knowing what they said could help others who run into the same issue. Your update might also help folks figure out if this is normal wear or something that needs attention.

@JamesonC Yes, they advised trying a light coating of lithium grease on the slides and working slide back and forth a few times. It definitely helped with mine. If that hadn't worked, I may have had to get the hitch back to them for further inspection.
