Longer Pin Box for 5th Wheel Towed By 2024 Ram 3500 Short Bed Using Trailer Saver BD5

Updated 11/05/2024 | Published 11/03/2024

Question:

My rig is a 3500 Ram mega cab with a short box with a Trailer Saver BD5 hitch, pulling a DRV Houston 24K GVWR, 3,000lbs hitch weight. The MORryde pinbox is RPB72-FB. the Center to center measurment of the pin to first set of bolts is 13-1/2 inch. Very short , in which I have limited turn radius. Do You have a Gen-Y solution or another way to achieve the trailer to cab distance?

Hi John; since that is a Lippert Rhino you will need the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel Pin Box - Lippert Rhino - 30,000 lbs - 6.5K TW # GY76PR. This is the correct pin box based on your GVWR. The distance from the center of the king pin to the first set of bolt holes is 16.631" so you will gain a little over 3" of clearance using this over the MORryde.

As you pointed out below there are no rotating pin boxes that will accommodate that GVWR to give you the clearance you need. I wasn't thinking about this initially since I was focused on which actual pin box you had so I could get the right fit and measurement. If you're planning on sticking with the Trailer Saver BD5 the Gen-Y is the best solution I have for additional clearance but I'm sure you will still have to know your limits and 90 degree turns won't be happening.. The only other option will be selling the Trailer Saver and getting a sliding hitch like the # BWRVK3670.

It is a FD, Yes it is a Lippert Rhino, the problem now is that the rating for the rotating pin boxes are much lower than the 24K GVWR that I need. Thoughts?

@John I went ahead and updated the answer above with the right Gen-Y pin box. This is the best option I know of short of switching to a slider.
