Why Are My Malone Crossbars Whistling When I Drive

Updated 12/03/2025 | Published 10/30/2024

Question:

Hi, I purchased Malone crossbars for my son. They whistle whenever he drives over 20 mph. I am looking for something to decrease the noise. I chatted with someone online and they recommended a different brand. I’m just wondering why not the Malone brand? Is it not as effective? Bad feedback or something? Just curious Thank you Michele

Hello Michele.

I am sorry to hear that the crossbars that you ordered for your son are making a whistling noise, this noise can be rather annoying.

On any kind of crossbar if there is a gap for air to get it in it will cause a whistling noise. I suggest that he looks over the Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack - Aero Crossbars - Raised Side Rails - Aluminum - 50" Long - Silver # MPG215 very closely to see if there is any kind of gap in the rubber stripping, or if there is an end cap lose or missing. If the stripping needs to be replaced he will want to replace it with Replacement Rubber Strip for Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack Crossbars - Top - 50" Long # MAL63TR.

If he is still hearing the whistling noise you could always get the Inno Fairing for Roof Racks - 40" Long - Black # INA261, this should help with the noise as well.

Pretty sure it's due to the end cap design with the flap. The flap has a lot of play and lets air into the end cap. Would be much better if they had a solid end cap design.

@Shawn I agree Shawn! Maybe you could take it off and put some electrical tape right around the points that go inside the bar, just a thin layer of tape like that could give it the seal that it needs. I would inspect the rubber stripping as well, make sure there isn't any gaps at all. The smallest opening can make the loudest whistle. I am sorry I do not have a better solution for you.
