Alarm On My 2022 Ford F-150 Goes Off When I Disconnect Trailer While Truck Is Off - Is This Normal?
Updated 10/30/2024 | Published 10/25/2024 >
Question:
I have a 2022 Ford F-150 STX with a factory tow package installed. The vehicle recognizes my trailer and will do the trailer light check with no issues. The question I have is when I park the truck and turn the truck off, I get a very low voltage flash from the rear led lights I notice this at night when parked. Is this normal? Is the truck doing a constant security check? I ask this, because if I disconnect the 4-pin connector while the truck is off the alarm will sound. If this is a normal function, will the low voltage check cause the battery to drain? I did a thorough ground cleaning and prep yesterday on the trailer but that didnt change the issue. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Hey Ron, thanks for reaching out. I have heard of this issue with some newer Ford trucks. The low voltage flash issue you are describing is normal. The truck will send a signal to the trailer to check for connection. The low voltage flash will only happen with LED lights and there is really no way around it. The amount of power sent is very small so you really do not need to worry about the battery draining. It is best to disconnect the trailer though, but that leaves us with the issue of the alarm.
The alarm going off is a security feature added by the genius engineers at Ford. The idea is if the truck and trailer are parked, and someone tries to disconnect and steal the trailer, the truck lights and alarm will sound. You should be able to take your truck to a dealership to have them reprogram the trailer module. Looking thru forums online it looks like a lot of other Ford owners have had this same issue, so a dealership will be your best bet.

Thanks for the reply Jesse. I really appreciate the research and answers you provided. Too many BELLS and WHISTLES on these new vehicles IMO. Just something else to BREAK and cause trouble and money in a few years!!! I'm ready to go back to vehicles that we can repair, bring back points and plugs and stop all this computer diagnostic stuff. THANKS AGAIN!!!
