Replacement Brake Kits with Handbrake for a Lightweight Off-Road Tent Trailer

Updated 10/24/2024 | Published 10/23/2024

Question:

Hello, I have a light ~1200lbs custom off-road tent trailer. I’m looking to add a mechanical handbrake to help with stability when in camp and the tent up. What options are out there for a reasonable budget? You can refinance 114632477 and 114632493 for my axle/hub setup.

Hey John, thanks for reaching out!

We have a handful of trailer brake assemblies that come with handbrakes so if kind of depends on what your trailer is equipped with. I'm not sure what those parts numbers are that you listed, but we don't have anything set in place to finance (or refinance) anything.

For electric brakes we have the 2.2K # K23-103-104-00 and 3.5K # K23-086-087-00 from Dexter Axle, but if you have a 3.5K hydraulic setup then the DeeMaxx # DE42GR is what I recommend picking up.

If you can verify the weight capacity of your axle I can let you know which one would be the best fit.

Most off-road trailers have jacks on the corners to help stabilize them when stationary, but if yours currently doesn't have any I recommend checking out the Ark Drop Down Corner RV Stabilizer Jacks # ARK94FR because they are really easy to use and were designed around off-road trailers.

Jon, My apologies, I meant reference not refinance. The 114632477 and 114632493 numbers are my old order numbers from e-trailer for the axles and hubs I have on the trailer. It currently does not have any brakes on it, and I would like to avoid the complexity of electric or hydraulic systems. I was thinking of a setup similar to the original M416 Jeep trailer handbrake.

@JohnS Awesome, thanks for the references! The only way we have to add a handbrake like that is to add a whole brake setup to your trailer. We have some alternative options like the CE Smith # CE32600 or FloTool # FT11930MI wheel chocks which aren't as quick and easy to use as an existing handbrake, but it's the closest thing we have to what you're looking for.
