I spoke to my contact at Bulldog who said whether your vehicle and trailer are level will not have much effect on the ease with which you can turn your crank. However, your jack may require some maintenance.
First you should check to see whether the jack is well greased. The jack has two grease zerks -- one on the side of the square tube and one on the gearbox. The top cap on the jack is removable so you can look inside and see if the compartment is dry. It may be a matter of applying grease to your jack.
Next, with the cap off, take a look inside to see whether the screw and nut assembly is damaged. If it is damaged the jack will have to be replaced.
