Should I Install Car Tires Or Trailer Tires On Utility Trailer?

Updated 09/30/2024 | Published 09/26/2024

Question:

I have car tires on a utility trailer and would really like to change them for trailer tires. Currently the car tires are 195/65 R15 and I’d really like to change them out for 225/75 R15. I like the idea of these Karrier’s AM32468

I agree it is best to put trailer tires back on the trailer instead of passenger car tires. That said, going from 195/65/15 (25" tall and 7.7" wide) to a 225/75/15 (28.3" tall and 8.9" wide) is quite a difference in dimensions. It may work, but you'll have to measure to make sure you can still have minimum of 3" clearance between tire and fender, then minimum of 1" of clearance between tire and suspension/frame.

I'd also recommend trying to figure out the OEM tire size on that trailer.

I will say, the 225/75/15 tire like Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2" # AM32468 is extremely common and likely what your trailer needs.
