Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Second tire/wheel combo from etrailer! First spare became replacement for a major blowout rolling down I95 NY to Florida. South Carolina I95 so bad, parts are coming off semi trucks. Missed with my truck, but cut tire down to wheel on tread and both side walls. Having the first etrailer spare ready was super! I did try to find the Karrier tire locally, but ended up back at etrailer. Fast delivery, great price and now with a new spare! Great job you guys.

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Misrepresented. The galavanized wheel/tire combination was for my boat as discussed with etrailer. I asked if they were balanced when I get them so I could determine the actual cost of purchase as well as other questions. I was told the wheel/tire combination was prebalanced. When they arrived, there were no balance weights. On a follow-up call the representative said the tires are mounted to minimize the vibration not industry standard weights. Additionally, these wheels look like they were dipped in galvanized environment at the beach. There are little chunks all over the rims and drips. Horrible. To ship them back was half the price of the purchase. It would bring down the look of my boat trailer significantly. I hope the tires are reliable...Buyer beware.

Comments
I will have our customer service team reach out to you. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced with weights on a balancing machine. Most likely you would not feel any difference having the wheel balanced. If you do prefer to balance them please remember that many trailer wheels are centered by the position of the lug bolts these wheels are lug-centric and not the center bore of the wheel. For best results, have them balanced using a pin plate adapter. This mimics the way a lug-centric wheel is mounted to a hub. The manufacturer will dip the rims in a galvanizing solution and allow the rims to drip dry. This does cause the rim to have a rough finish however will still provide the corrosion resistance needed.

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

The packaging and shipping time was great. However, the wheels look like they had started to rust and then painted over. I didn’t expect the wheels to appear to have rust before they were removed from the boxes.

Comments
Thank you for your review! If you are concerned about the wheel rusting, I just wanted to share a link to an article with tips and tricks to prevent rust. And I also wanted to note that the galvanized finish can have a rough or uneven texture to it which may explain the texture you are seeing. I hope this helps!

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Tires and wheels work great on my trailer for my 20 ft aluminum duck boat. I dirve about 40 miles each way to hunt and hunt about 30 times each year. My trailer and tires get more mileage than most boat trailers. Key to long tire life is good tires and alignment of trailer wheels. First set of tires on this trail direct from factory only lasted a few months. Trailers do not come aligned from factory or dealer. Always get your trailer wheels aligned. Check your local wheel alignment shops and other boaters to find what alignment shop in your area specializes in trailer wheel alignment. Good high end tires from etrailer that are balanced and aligned are well worth the money.

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

My wheel and tire were back ordered a few days but etrailer customer service staff kept me 100% up to date on my order's time frame and even offered to substitute similar items if I was in a rush situation. I was not, so I waited. Constant email contact continued including notice that my item was delivered. BRAVO to etrailer Customer Service (Bridget and George J.) I am very pleased with this combo as they arrived fully inflated and the galvanizing is 100% and should last a long time. These are my spare wheel/tire but I would be absolutely happy having them as my primary; probably will order 4 more of these when I need to replace the 4 primary. The unit looks pretty sweet on my aluminium trailer. Unfortunately I was not able to source my spare tire mount from etrailer as I have 5.25" aluminium frame rails. Upon receipt of my mount I did not like my original intended frame rail position so I ended up mounting behind my jack; etrailer has mounts that would have worked for me. The clearance between frame rail and tire is tight. I will eventually move jack 2" fwd, and move spare 2" fwd as well. I suggest going to Fastenal Store and upgrading the grade mounting bolts - I went from grade 5 suggested to grade 6 for peace of mind. After 100 miles re-torque your mounting bolts and add witness marks. Thanks again, etrailer.com! Great job on product selection, pricing, customer service and fast delivery!

Comments
I never needed to move jack forward as originally planned to do as above. Looks great, no sign of corrosion or rust to any components, no loss of air pressure, still 100 perfectly mounted and all bolts are tight as originally torqued. The unit does not flex or bounce when under way. About 1000 miles towed since installed. Very pleased 100 recommended.

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I bought a Loadstar 205/75R14 Radial tire/galvanized wheel assembly along with a U-Bolt type attachment as a spare for my aluminum trailer. I've had good luck with the quality of etrailer items so far and didn't want a cheaper spare tire from an unknown/fake lable manufacturer that you can sometimes get from a certain prime warehouse outfit on the internet. It all seems good but hopefully won't have to find out how good the tire is anytime soon. I do love the photos of the folks at etrailer who process the order as well as the map visual of the shipping progress. A nice touch and shows the attention to detail and quality etrailer gives to their product, services, and customers. Thanks

I ordered these wheels and tires to replace the ones on my boat trailer that have seen there better days after salt water exposure. The quality looks to be very good and they fit perfectly. After the order arrived I was contacted by etrailer.com and asked if everything was satisfactory. This company is serious about taking care of their customers. I will use them again.

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Bought 3 tires and wheels for my boat trailer and spare. The load rating and rated speed were above average. The date code on the tires shows they are fresh. The tires and galvanized wheels look excellent. My old tires looked good too, but I got snake bit with two blowouts on a long trip due to age of the tires. Replace tires when they get old even if they have been out of the weather and have good tread. Very happy with my purchase and fast delivery.

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I'm glad to see I have an option to garbage bias ply 4.80x12 trailer tires. I've tried a lot of them over the years and always the same result, poor quality, ride, and terrible tread life. My last set of bias plys on a 2 ski pwc trailer were already down to the wear bars in a year and maybe 1000-1200 miles. Ordered these galvanized wheels and kenda radials and as always etrailer got them here very fast and well packed. Took them to my local tire guy and he balanced them. Didn't take much weight and watching them spin showed a straight rim and tire. Installed them and was shocked the first trip to the river. Zero vibration from the trailer! Bias plies seem to bounce and transfer it to my truck through the hitch. These tires are smooth, no trailer bounce, pull great, and I don't see my yamahas vibrating in the rear view mirror. Fast forward a few months till now. I probably have 5-600 miles on them. Still perfect, zero air loss, zero tread wear noted. I will buy these from now on based on what I'm seeing so far.

Review from a similar Karrier Galvanized in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I ordered 4 of these for my boat trailer to replace the old tires/ wheels for safety sake and piece of mind. ---you are most likely buying this for its low price. Tire dealers in my area could not even come close to etrailer's price on this tire/wheel combo with the free shipping deal ----Most trailer tires are made in China, this one is no exception. ----I liked that the DOT date code on the tires shipped to me was with the last few months. Problems: ---One of the rims was bent when I got it. I believe it was a manufacturing defect. The good news is that the return and exchange with etrailer was very easy. Unfortunately the replacement wheel/tire they sent me was bent as well. So they processed a 2nd return for me and sent me a replacement. I think the quality control on the 'stamping' or fabricating of the wheels is lacking. So I would ask that customers check the wheels on receiving them.

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire Size ST225/75-15 for Utility Trailer
As long as your trailer has a bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inches the Kenda Wheel and Tire kit part # AM32468 that you referenced would work great as a replacement for the wheel and tire on your trailer currently that has a size of 225/75-15. That being said I would instead recommend the part # A225R645SMV as it is basically the same setup but with a tire that has an 81 mph speed rating.

  • Should Larger Tires and Wheels be Used to Go Camping on the Beach with a Trailer
Ultimately you want the most surface area on sand so if you have the means to upgrade your tire/wheel size then go for it! What you need to do prior to purchasing new tires/wheels is to go out and check on your current set to see what kind of clearances you have. You want to have at least 4" of clearance above your tires (for suspension travel) and then at least 2" of clearance between the sidewall of your tires and your trailer frame. With all of that being said, the largest tire you'd...

These are all mounted on wheels already for added convenience. Be sure to inspect for how much clearance you have with larger tires as well and if you have any concerns about the larger sizes let me know what clearances you currently have. This has a tire that is sized 225/75/15 with a C load rating, and aluminum wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. The size difference between the two size is that the ST225/75-15 will be about 1.4 inches taller than a ST205/75-15. For a tire in the ST225/75R15 size on a steel galvanized rim with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the part # AM32468. This is a radial tire which is a better construction than the bias-ply you mentioned. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. • Radial vs Bias Tire for a Boat Trailer
The difference between Radial and Bias tires is that Radials will run cooler than Bias (making them last longer for highway applications) and they have more flexibility for better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. Bias tires have a stiffer sidewall which makes them ideal for off-road use like on a farm. Since most people transport their boats on the highway I recommend going with a Radial tire. With that said we have quite a few options with the 225/75/15 tire and a 15" wheel with 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. The most important thing is to find if your current tires are bias ply or radials, and make the spare the same type. Mixing radials and bais ply tires causes a very unstable ride.
