What Does Load Range For Trailer Tires Mean And How Do You Pick The Right Replacement Tires

Updated 09/26/2024 | Published 09/23/2024

Question:

Hi there, I have a single axle travel trailer that is approximately 3500 lbs. My current trailer size is 225/75R15 D. I want to replace the tires in the spring of 2025. My question is about load weight on the tire rating, could you advise me or explain this to me please? Many thx in advance.

Hi Lynne,

I'd be happy to explain how load range works. The load range is the newer way to indicate a tire's ply rating/load capacity. This rating is indicated with the letters B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and so on and the further along the alphabet you go the higher the capacity/ply rating.

A lot of the time people want to swap to a higher load range for some extra capacity to avoid a blow out if the trailer is really heavy. There is a point where too high can be too much though and you can end up having too stiff of a tire for the trailer weight to properly compress the tire, which can lead to uneven tire wear. Going up one tier shouldn't affect you negatively but a lot of people try to go up 2 or more and then start running into issues.

If you're just wanting to replace the tires and stick with the same load range D rating then I recommend going with the Provider ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # TTWTRTM2257515D. These have a 2,540lbs capacity at 65 psi so you wouldn't want to go any higher with your trailer only weighing 3,500lbs.
