Do Extra Precautions Need to be Taken to Make Sure Yakima EXO Doesn't Rock Side to Side

Updated 01/28/2026 | Published 08/26/2024

Question:

My husband has a concern that this carrier will rock from side to side? He wants to add bolts to the hinges on the back doors of our Travato, then strap this down every time we travel. I do NOT want to have to go through this extra step each time we load and unload. Your thoughts? Thanks

A wise man once told me not to get in the middle of a couple's disagreement so I won't say anyone is necessarily right, but what I can say is that the Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier # Y62VR installs on the hitch receiver by using a threaded anti-rattle hitch pin, and the arm sits very snug during travel and secures with a threaded pin so you won't see hardly any movement during travel.

As long as your 2" hitch receiver is properly installed, no extra measures will need to be taken to secure the Yakima EXO system for safe traveling.

Hey, how did the Yakima EXO cargo carrier work out on your Travato during travel? Did it stay steady without needing those extra straps your husband mentioned? Your update could make it easier for others deciding on the same setup.

@JesseM. It worked just fine. No, straps or anything else needed or used. My husband is definitely an overachiever and he wants things to be absolutely secure and perfect.

@Tj Nothing wrong with wanting to cover all your bases and do things right. Sounds like you ended up getting your way though. Good job haha! Seriously though, glad to hear the EXO setup is working well without the need for any additional straps. Thanks for taking the time to share!
