Parts Needed To Install A Brake Controller In A 2010 Toyota Highlander

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/19/2024

Question:

Hello, I have a question on the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, Part Number: C56217. Can you please provide the wiring/schematic diagram for the wiring harness? I want to tap into the brake wire of the harness and connect it to the stop wire of the brake controller. Thank you.

Hi Mel,

That's not how you'll need to connect a brake controller to your 2010 Toyota Highlander. You would need to either find the cold side of the brake light switch by testing the wires coming from the brake pedal for the one that only has power when the pedal is depressed or by installing a stop light switch # RM-751000 and using its output for the red wire of the brake controller wire harness. Does your Highlander already have a 7-way connector or do you still need one? The Curt # C56217 wouldn't be able to send the brake signal back to the trailer.

If you don't know what you have and just want to send me pictures I can take a look and get you what you do need to get you ready to tow a trailer with brakes.

Hey Mel, what ended up working for your Highlander when you connected the brake controller? Knowing how you handled the brake light signal could help others setting up a similar wiring harness.
