Will A Hellwig Rear Anti-Sway Bar Help With Stability While Towing with A 2022 Ford Expedition XL

Updated 01/23/2026 | Published 08/11/2024

Question:

I have a 2022 Ford Expedition XL STX, short wheel base, rear wheel drive with tow package and WDH. I have considerable movement in vehicle, in windy conditions and when a 18-wheeler flies by, while towing 6200 lb travel trailer. 800 lb tongue weight. Tail wagging the dog? Trailer stays nice and straight. Would the hellwig stabilizer bar help? It looks to be the same diameter as the current bar that is on the vehicle.

Hey Michael,

Adding to or enhancing your suspension would help with body roll and side-to-side movement. When it comes to anti-sway bars you'll want to go with whichever is the thickest. The Hellwig # HE74GR is 7/8" thick so you can measure your factory bar and see if it's thicker.

You could also install some Coil SumoSprings # CSS-1168R in the rear and front # CSS-1168F to stiffen up the suspension and also help with load leveling support.

Hey Michael, how did things turn out after checking the thickness of your factory sway bar on the Expedition? Did the Hellwig bar or the Coil SumoSprings make a difference in reducing that side-to-side movement? Your update could make it easier for others towing similar trailers.

Hi John, I replace the sway bars both front and back on my 2022 Ford Expedition with the Helwig bars. The bars are the same diameter as the factory ones but the strength of the Hellwig product is much stronger and they have stopped a huge percentage of the side to side body roll I was experiencing with my Expedition while Towing my 26 ft 6000 lb travel trailer. I also had a complete wheel alignment done. Thank you

@MichaelW That's awesome Michael, thanks for sharing! Glad to hear the Hellwig bars are working so well for you. That's a great real-world comparison that I'm sure will help others looking into similar setups. Thanks again for the feedback!
