Hey Jeffrey,

It really depends on the rack and trailer hitch that the rack is mounted into. Lower class (class 1 & 2) typically have a stipulation requiring you use straps for heavier items but higher class (3 and up) typically won't have that same requirement. If the rack itself has rules about using a strap then I would recommend doing so as well. The straps are there to help stabilize and support the weight so as long you don't tie them to a loose part of the rack or a trim piece that could break off of the vehicle you shouldn't have a problem. E-bikes are expensive and most wear and tear from bike racks comes from them wagging around in the trailer hitch as you travel so anything you can do to help keep them secure is going to be a good option.

I have a Class 3 Hitch on the back of my 5th wheel. Manufacturer specifically says it is only for Bike Racks and NOT for Towing. The Hitch is Rated for 3000 lbs. and the Receiver for 300 lbs. Still being an OVERLY Safe person, I will equip my new Bike Rack with Safety Chains. The Rack itself is setup for chains or straps. That's what will be going on it! Thanks for the reply. Jeff
