Will Shorter Leaf Springs Be Compatible With A Dump Trailer Suspension
Updated 01/20/2026 | Published 08/07/2024 >
Question:
I have a dump trailer will tandem 7k axle. Has 8k spring measured out to 26” with eq-356 equalizer. Switched the springs to 7k spring that measured out to 25”1/4 and added the eq-e1 equalizer. Will this set up be wrong or can you make that change?

Hi Jay,
So I typically recommend going with the same sized components when replacing your suspension so that you don't have to worry about it binding up and not wanting to travel when hitting bumps in the road. People tend to overload dump trailers so they'll go with heavier springs than their axle is rated for to try and prevent them from flattening out. From the pictures your shackle straps and equalizer look to be forming a 'W' still just like the with the previous components so you'll likely be fine but it's hard to tell without actually seeing the trailer with weight on the suspension.
Essentially, the goal is to form a 'W' with the shackle straps so that there's enough room for them to come inwards without hitting the center hanger while also being long enough so that the strap can't flip down and drop the axle lower. The longer equalizer should make up for the shorter leaf springs but you can also give it test run by putting the wheels back on and driving around a little bit to see how the suspension does. If the shackle straps flip down then you'll need longer leaf springs.

Hey Jay, how did things go after you tested the dump trailer with the new 7k springs and the EQ-E1 equalizer? Did the suspension keep that “W” shape under load? Sharing what you found could help others working through the same setup.
