Question:
Why do I have to run a 10 guage wire to get power to the brake controller

Hey Stanley, so this is a really good question. The reason brake controllers require heavier gauge wire to power them is because the controller is what provides the current that goes back to the trailer brake assemblies to apply them which is a decent amount of an amperage load.
So you need to be able to draw a decent amount of power from the vehicle battery through the 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 so that it is able to deliver enough amperage to apply the trailer brakes.
