Quieter Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Trailer with 1,500 lb Tongue Weight

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/02/2024

Question:

I have a travel trailer. According to my weigh safe hitch, the tongue weight is 1400-1500lbs. The Husky hitch that the dealer installed is rated at 1000-1400. It is also noisy. Im looking at the Blue Ox WDH. One maxes out at 1500lbs tw, the next starts at 1600lbs tw. Is there a downside to getting the higher rated hitch? My trailer has nothing in it yet, so it is likely to get heavier. My priorities are safe, sway control, and as quiet as possible. Truck is rated max tongue weight of 1850, so Im good there.

Hey David, so you are on the right track but I would go a different route as there isn't a Blue Ox system that is rated properly for your trailer and it's not going to be much quieter. I would instead go with the Reese part # RP66006 which is rated for 1,100 to 1,700 lb TW and since it doesn't have any friction based sway control it won't be quite as noisy. You should note that all WD systems make some noise as there is moving parts that are under quite a bit of tension.

Hey David, how did things go with the Reese weight distribution hitch you were considering for your trailer? Did it help cut down on the noise while keeping the sway under control? Your feedback could really help others comparing similar setups.
