Where Should I Attach Safety Chains When Using Fulton Coupler Hinge Kit?

Updated 02/04/2026 | Published 07/28/2024

Question:

Subject- location of chain attachment to tongue Instructions say to attach chains behind the swivel trailer side of swivel I do have a hole in the tongue there and could bolt them on there but with my extension of 36 inches that would be a long set of chains. Is there any reason that I cannot attach them where they are in the picture, just behind the bolt on tongue ball receiver? Maybe a second set of chains across the swivel in case it came loose? Thanks

Hello Philip. I do have to recommend that you attach your safety chains behind the hinge as it says in the instructions. The hinge is technically a breaking point, so we want the chains attached behind this braking point. I know this will mean a longer than ordinary chain because of the length of the tongue, but this is the safest way to attach the chains.

Hey Philip, how did things go with attaching the safety chains behind the hinge on your trailer tongue? Did the longer chain length work out safely with your 36-inch extension? Your update could make it easier for others using the same hinge kit.

No I did not do it I did a series of chains as to do a chain from the truck hitch reciever to behind the hinge would be extremely long Phil

@PhilipD Thanks for following up, Philip. That makes sense, once you see the distance involved it does get pretty long with a hinge extension in the mix. As long as you’re aware the hinge is the weak point and are comfortable with the setup you’re running, that’s what matters. Appreciate you circling back, it helps others understand the tradeoff there.
