Question:

Hello, Im looking for the strongest, sturdiest 4-bike rack for my class A motorhome. I have a 2 hitch in the rear, and please let me know if you have a hitch extender you recommend to ensure bikes dont hit rear of RV.

Hey Andy,

I can help you out here and the strongest 4-bike rack that is also rated for use on the back of a motorhome is one from Hollywood Racks:

- Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack for 4 Bikes # HR1400Z

The # HR1400Z has a 50 lb per-bike capacity (so 200 lbs total), is made of steel, and has an anti-rattle handle that you turn to ensure added stability while the rack is in your hitch. Hollywood Racks is known for making the sturdiest bike racks, and it's exactly the brand I would go with if dependability and strength was my main focus.

Regarding a hitch extender, there is with the 7" Extender # HE06, though keep in mind an extender will reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50%. For example, if your hitch had a 500 lb tongue weight capacity it would be reduced to 250 lbs, so that's the most a bike rack and its bikes could be. For the extender you'd also need Hitch Lock # e98880.

The # HR1400Z weighs 91 lbs and if your bikes were each 50 lbs that's a total of 291 lbs, so keep that in mind. You may not need an extender though because the distance from the face of the hitch to the closest part of the rack is 7-1/2", which is a pretty good distance.

Hey Andy, how did the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE work out on your motorhome? Did you find that the 7-inch hitch extender gave you enough clearance from the rear of the RV? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a similar bike rack.

@JesseM The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE is working out great. I regularly place 4 full-size bikes on it, and it is attached to the hitch of my RV. The rack keeps the bikes snug and has not exhibited stress/strain on any parts. An optional 7-inch hitch extender works great, but I opted not to use it because there is considerable bounce at the rear of my Class A motorhome and I feared the extender would lead to additional unnecessary stress on the rack as the bikes bounced. The bikes fit without the extender, but one of the handle bars rubs against the RV necessitating the use of a foam pad to limit scratches to the RV body. Thanks for the suggestion of the Hollywood Rack system! I went through other racks including a 4 bike Thule that weren't able to withstand the stresses induced by the bounce of a 35' Class A motorhome rear area. Motorhomes bounce considerably more than passenger vehicles at the rear hitch, and the Hollywood rack is holding up nicely!

@Andy Thanks for taking the time to write that up, Andy. That’s really helpful feedback, especially the comparison to other racks you tried and how much rear-end bounce a Class A introduces. Good idea on skipping the extender too, that added leverage can definitely make things worse back there. Glad to hear the Sport Rider SE is keeping four full-size bikes secure without stressing the rack, and the foam pad tip for protecting the RV is a solid call. Sounds like you’ve got a well-thought-out setup. Thanks again for taking the time to share!
