Troubleshooting Tires Wearing in Center After Axle Installation
Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/24/2024 >
Question:
After installing a new axle, my 5.30-12 biased tires are wearing fast in the center. I thought they weee too inflated but they still wore the Sam when I took the psi down. What may cause this? Should I try a radial tire?

Hi Mike; I really don't think it is related to the axle installation since I would expect inside or outside wear from a misaligned axle or other components. When you took the psi down were they still overinflated? The tires should be at the max psi listed on the side, no higher or lower unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer. If you're overloading the tires that could also do it so make sure your weight doesn't exceed what the tires can handle.
Upgrading to a radial tire is almost always a good idea regardless of the wear. Sticking with the same size you could use the # TT53012C. These have a Load Range C for a max load of 1,050 lbs at 80 psi. However, I would try to sort out the tire wear issue first. If nothing else, it might be a good idea to take it to a trailer shop and have them look it over just to get another set of eyes on it.
