Can Curt Weight Distribution System Increase Towing Capacity of 2005 Ford F-150

Updated 07/15/2024 | Published 06/29/2024

Question:

I have a 2005 Ford F150. I am towing a 5,000 lerner dual axle 20foot trailer. I want to increase my ability to tow more weight as per the specifications I have right now on the truck with just a normal hitch it is 5,000 lbs. Will this weight distribution set up increase my weight rating? Will it work with my dual axle trailer? What do you recommend? Thanks so much. Ron

Hey Ron, it's pretty common for trucks like your 2005 Ford F-150 to have an increased towing capacity if the truck is using a weight distribution system like the Curt MV part # C17051 that you referenced BUT one of the only ways to know by how much is to check the sticker on the hitch that has the towing capacities listed. You should basically see two sets of towing capacities with one of them being higher if a weight distribution system is being used.

Hi, Yes, on my bumper it states "carrying weight - 5,000 lbs and weight distribution 9,900 lbs" So, the key question I have then is the Curt MV part #17051 compatible with my 2005 F150 towing a dual axle trailer? Thanks so much. Ron

@Ron With a WD system you can safely tow a trailer up to 9,900 lbs then. The # C17051 has a tongue weight range of 600-800 lbs so you'd need to make sure the trailer you plan to tow has a tongue weight that falls in that range. Not all dual axle trailers weight the same.
