Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Kit Recommendation for Older Dexter D1012 Axles

Updated 08/01/2024 | Published 06/25/2024

Question:

I have a pair of Dexter D1012 air brake axles. These are older mid 90’s era axles. I would like to swap them out to electric over hydraulic disc brakes. Right now I have 225/75 R16 tires with 8x6.5 bolt pattern. What kit will fit my application?

Hey Tom, thanks for reaching out!

I tried reaching out to Dexter about what the correct replacement would be for your axles but I haven't heard back from them yet. I'm not sure if there is any difference between air axles and standard axles, but from the information you gave me I believe the Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Tandem Axle Trailers # HSE7K-T1 and Breakaway Battery Kit # 20099 will work.

One thing I recommend doing though is checking to make sure the bearings and seal are compatible with your spindles. If you pull one of your current hubs you can check the bearing numbers and seal dimensions of this kit with what you have. Here is what this kit comes with:

- Inner Bearing: 25580
- Outer Bearing: 14125A
- Grease Seal Dimensions: ID 2.250" and OD 3.376"

Let me know if you have any questions!

Jon, Thanks for getting back to me. I was afraid etrailer might be able to help. You do need to go back to the drawing board though. The D1012 axle is a minimum of 10k and sometimes up to 12k. The kit you advised is for a 7k axles. I have also never heard of a 7k air brake axle. I contacted Dexter and they told me mine is the 10k. Now what kit would you advise? Thank you Tom

@Tom Thanks for the extra information! With that being said, it looks like you would need to go to the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-288-3UC1 (see bearing and seal info below) and the Kodiak Disc Brakes # K2R1058D11DAC. Idler Hub Info - Inner Bearing: 387A - Outer bearing: 25580 - Grease Seal Dimensions: ID 2.875" and OD 3.880"

@JonG Just wanted to follow up on this switch over. I finally took the wheels off the axle and wanted to get a better look at what I was dealing with. It does not appear that the axles can easily be changed over from Air to Disc brakes. The problem is in the mounting. There is no plate on the axles to mount up the brake calipers. So in order to convert them, you would have to cut off all the air components and then weld on a mount bracket for the disc or electric brake calipers. More work than I want to do at the moment. I share this so you can share or use this knowledge in the future. Tom
