Replacement Coupler to Allow Truck Tailgate to Open

Question:
I’m looking for a trailer hitch coupler that will allow my trucks tailgate to open fully without the two coming in contact. As it is right now there is only 1.3” between the top of my hitch ball and tailgate when the gate is fully open, add the height of the couplers latch and the two hit just before the tailgate fully opens. Unfortunately I cannot simply lower the ball as that would put the trailer in too much of a front low attitude. Any couplers without the latch on top that might work? Thanks for your time and assistance! Dennis.

Hi Dennis; this will largely depend on the coupler style and size you need. It would also be helpful to know what kind of coupler and latch you have now. I have attached links below for straight tongue and A-frame couplers from Demco. The Demco EZ-Latch like the one found on the # DM13203-95 is pretty low profile so that may work for you. If it has a trigger style latch like the one on the # 12564 then the height difference would probably be enough to let you clear it.

Hey Dennis, did the lower-profile Demco EZ-Latch coupler give you enough clearance for your tailgate to open fully? Your results could really help others trying to solve the same tight clearance issue.
