Issue With Trailer Wheel Valve Stem Breaking Could it be PSI

Updated 06/13/2024 | Published 06/06/2024

Question:

I have been having issues with the valve stem breaking leaking on a new set of tires and rims bought a year ago. Tires are Goodyear trailer st21575R14 in two years I’ve had to replace valves stem twice. Service is telling me high pressure ones are Being used. Tire pressure rating is 65 I’ve been running low pressure as road use is raising pressure 6-7 lbs. that makes them at 71psi Service said metal bolt on might not fit the rim. Any ideas?

Hi Larry,

It could be the valve stem doesn't fit, or it could be it isn't rated for the proper psi. Without knowing the exact part numbers of what you have though, it's impossible to answer. But a trailer wheel will have either a 0.453" or 0.625" hole for the valve stem to install in, and needs to be rated properly, of course. I would change valve stems to the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem # AM20906.

This is rated for over 100 psi and fits both 0.453" and 0.625" holes.
