How to Find Reverse Light for Install of Brake Controller 7-Way Kit ETBC7

Updated 06/04/2024 | Published 05/30/2024

Question:

Hello, I just recently installed the 4 to 7 pin harness kit, ETBC7L on my 2023 Subaru Outback. Overall, the installation was quite easy. Everything is working as expected, except for two things the reverse lights and running lights on my trailer NuCamp Tag XL. For the reverse lights on the ETBC7L kit, you must attach the yellow wire to the reverse lights wire on the vehicle. For the life of me, I have not been able to find this wire. Would you know where this wire located on the Subaru outback? I have run into a dead end. In regards to the tail and running lights they are functioning on the car and trailer but not through the 7 pinverified with a tester. Do you have any suggestions or trouble shooting ideas. Thanks for the assist.

Hey Albert, yeah finding the reverse light circuit on a vehicle can be somewhat challenging but I have some tips that will hopefully be helpful. So first thing to do is remove the interior panels on the rear hatch where the reverse lights are like you are going to replace the reverse light bulbs. Test the wires that lead to the socket with a tester like part # PTW2993 till you find the one that has voltage when reverse lights are on. Note the color of the wire.

Now go up to the wire loom at the top corner of the open hatch and open it up so that you can see the wires. Find the wire color you matched to the reverse light circuit and then trace it down in the interior panels to where it makes most sense to access it and then splice in there. I know it's somewhat of a pain but it's only way.

I would check to see if any of the pins on the 4-way of your vehicle and the adapter have any corrosion on the brown wire's pin.
