Question:
Hello, I have a 2019 Ram 2500 6.4 short bed with the Puck system. I am looking for a lightweight 5th wheel hitch as weve sold our travel trailer and looking to upgrade to a 5th wheel. Id like to go lightweight for the payload factor but also because there will be times that my wife may need to remove/install the hitch. I have been looking at the CURT Crosswing 16600 but Im unsure if it will be compatible with my system. Is there an adapter that mounts above bed so Im not having to remove my bed that will allow this to work with my truck? Or is there a better system that you might recommend? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Deston S

Hello Deston. The Curt Crosswing # C86JR is definitely going to be the lightest 5th wheel hitch we have. It weighs about 60 lbs so removing it from the bed will be easy. Any other hitch will be well over 100 lbs, with the heaviest hitches like a B&W or Demco weighing in the ballpark of 300 lbs. Since your truck has the puck system, you will need to use the Adapter Rails # C29BR in order to use the Crosswing hitch.
That said, we generally recommend a sliding 5th wheel hitch like the B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3670 for trucks like yours with the short bed. This is to help gain clearance on sharp turns. A slider is not necessarily required since every truck and trailer combo is different. The downside here is that sliding hitches are quite heavy. The # BWRVK3670 that I mentioned weighs 300 lbs.
If you do choose to stick with the Crosswing hitch, please do be mindful of the clearance between the nose of the camper and the cab of your truck. Especially when you are making sharp turns. Feel free to comment below if you have further questions.
