what size butyl tape do i need to use under J-rail trim properly? i could only find 1/4 in wide so i used 3 strips side by side...will that work?

That sounds fine to me, Christine. Butyl tape is just used to water proof areas, so the main thing you'd want to make sure you're doing is sealing any places that could take in water - i.e., gaps in trim, screw holes, etc, so whatever that size that shakes out to be is the size you'd need.
