To tow a vehicle behind a motor home with all wheels on the ground the first step is to consult the vehicle owners manual. Some vehicles have special requirements or restrictions and procedures for flat towing.

If your model can be flat towed then the first thing you are going to need are base plates on the 2014 GMC Terrain. The base plates provide a proper and secure attachment point for the tow bar. Demco base plates # DM9518315 are listed as a fit for all models of the 2014 GMC Terrain.

For a compatible tow bar I like the Demco Commander # DM9511012. It'll pair up nicely with the base plates and includes safety cables. The Commander has indpendent arms to make it easier to hook up to the Terrain.

Next you will need lighting. If you will not be towing often I recommend a magnetic light kit, # RM-2120. For a more permanent solution you can use the bulb and socket kit, # RM-155. In either case, it looks like you will need to pull a fuse to flat tow the vehicle, consult owners manual to confirm.

Pulling fuses can be a pain, especially if it is in a hard to reach place or if you flat tow the vehicle often. To make removing power from the fuse as simple as flipping a switch you can use fuse bypass # RM76511.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. I recommend the Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251. It's permanently installed into the Terrain so it's easier to set the vehicle up to tow each time.

A 12 volt outlet kit is recommended, # RM-9332, for the braking system as well as a stop light switch kit # RM-751439. The switch kit lets you know that the brake pedal in the Terrain is actually moving. If not using the switch kit, should the braking system fall over or slip off the brake pedal, you would not know it.

I have included a couple of helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
