Hand-Crank Winch Options for Boat Trailer and 18-Foot Javelin Bass Boat with 115HP Outboard
Published 04/18/2014 >
Question:
I have a 18foot Javelin bass boat with 115 HP outboard and of course loaded with all the gear it can hold. Ive had two back surgeries and not lookig to add the third and am looking for some relief. The original hand-crank winch is still operable but makes me work harder at putting the boat on the trailer than I think I should. Ive investigated some electric winches but dont think that is way to go. Any recommendations you can offer?

If you prefer the simplicity of a hand-crank winch over the complexity of a powered type (and many do) then your best option to reduce your cranking effort (and back stress) when pulling your 18-ft Javelin bass boat onto your trailer is a 2-speed hand crank winch.
Winches are one of those categories of product where more is definitely better, so I suggest you go for the highest rated winch available. Even though you may not require its full capacity for your particular boat, using a winch well below its actual capabilities will result in plenty of safety margin. It will also be easier to crank a higher-capacity winch. The up-charge for a higher-rated winch is modest compared to the benefits.
An excellent example of a 2-speed winch is the Fulton XLT, part # F142425, which is intended for use with the included strap, making it a perfect non-corrosive boating item. This winch has a 3200-lb capacity and a 16:1 low-speed gear ratio for easy cranking. A review video is linked for your reference.
I also included a link to our main page for all 2-speed hand-crank winches and one for an article on hand winches.
