This is great to use when hooked up to full hookups. Does this still allow you to also use Propane to heat the water when boondocking?

Yes, you are still able to heat your hot water using propane with the Hott Rod RV Water Heater Conversion Kit # DGR6VP installed. This kit simply helps you either save propane when you have full hook ups as well as allowing you to heat the water faster so there is less chances of running out of hot water in the shower.
