Question:
Hey, 2018 Audi Q7 Premier+ with a factory tow package installed. I picked this vehicle up used, everything in working order but I dont know full history. Anyway, put in the Audi recommended curt triflex + wire harness adapter and everything seemed to be working smoothly. Went and hitched up my trailer, towed it home the long way hour and a half no issues. Unhitched for a day, loaded the trailer, hitched up, and went on my merry way. No issues at all, was hitting a couple pockets of wind driving the highway so was occasionally tapping the manual brake. Rainy day but nothing out of the ordinary on the drive until while just driving down the highway the controller stopped responding and started throwing an O.L. code. I pulled over at a weigh station, looked up the code, checked the harness/controller wiring and the socket wiring. Everything appeared fine. Disconnected the trailer, unplugged and plugged back in the controller, then hit the manual brake. It clicked and threw the O.L. code. Found the fuses to check and the 15amp fuse for the trailer hitch socket. Picked up a replacement fuse, threw it in, and it also fried. Read it might be the controller, picked up a new one, hit the manual brake and tripped O.L., and my heart plummeted. Left that plugged in while I went back on my phone to Google more and the controller started smoking! Im leaning blue wire short somewhere in the cars tow package setup. Can I somehow take the blue wire from the controller and run it to the 7pin? How/what parts are recommended? Am I skipping a crucial step?

My concern is the Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake Controller # C24VV not getting enough power on your 2018 Audi Q7. There is a technical bulletin which I have linked below since the wiring on your Q7 will not provide enough power to the trailer brakes which is causing the OL error you are getting. You will need the following components from your Audi dealer.
1 connector housing (#1J0-972-782)
2 wire/terminal assemblies (#000-979-228)
These will help you to wire in a 30-Amp Relay # BL63VR.
If you also wish to increase the size of the blue brake wire you can run a separate wire # 10-1-1(sold per foot) from the controller to the 7-way. Be sure to use some Wire Loom # 7509-1 also sold per foot, to protect any areas the wire is exposed.
