Upgrading Trailer Tire Size on 16 by 6 inch Rim

Updated 03/31/2014 | Published 03/29/2014

Question:

I have 16XJ rims, 8 lugs, maximum 3750# 110psi. The current tires are st235/80R16 - E rated. Can I safely install a 235/85R16 on the same rims? Thank you.

The Karrier ST235/85R16 Trailer Tire # AM10248 could potentially fit the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel 16" x 6" Rim # AM20750 though it would be about 1/2 inch taller. If you have clearance around the tire for a larger size you could use it.

Remember to always inflate a trailer tire to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. Because trailer tires have a thicker side wall than passenger car tires, under inflating them would cause excessive heat build up in the side wall and lead to tire failure.

I have included links to our trailer tire and trailer tire sizing FAQ articles for you.
